Alfred Clyde Boswell, Jr. (b. Feb. 23, 1900, Kansas City – d. Oct. 23, 1918, New Orleans) Eldest child of A.C. and Meldania Boswell, brother and early musical influence to Martha, Connie and Vet Boswell. Died from complications of the Spanish Flu in boot camp at the end of WWI. Artie Bernstein (b. Feb. 4, 1909, Brooklyn – d. Jan. 4, 1964, LA) Double bassist and cellist who performed on at least 20 Brunswick Boswell Sisters song recordings with the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra and others. Enrico Cariso (b. Feb. 25, 1873, Naples, Italy – d. Aug. 2, 1921, Naples, Italy) Italian operatic tenor who was cited by Connee Boswell as one of her two main vocal influences (Mamie Smith was the other). Jimmy Dorsey (b. Feb. 29, 1904, Shenandoah, Penn. – d. June 12, 1957, NYC) Jazz clarinetist, saxophonist, composer and big band leader. Worked with his brother Tommy on the Boswell Sisters Brunswick recordings from March 1931 (when they recorded the 'standing ovation' hit When I Take my Sugar to Tea) through June 1934. Joe Tarto (b. Feb. 22, 1902 – d. Aug. 24, 1986) Jazz tubist and bassist who played on many Brunswick label Boswell Sisters' songs. Manny Klein (b. Feb. 4, 1908, NYC – d. May 31, 1994, LA) Jazz trumpeter who played on many Brunswick label Boswell Sisters' songs. Patty Andrews (b. Feb. 16, 1918, Mound, Minn. – d. Jan. 30, 2013, Northridge, Calif.) One of the famous Andrews Sisters who was quoted by Dave Dexter as saying, "The Boswells were the best. In Minneapolis, as kids, we listened to their every radio broadcast and we had most all their records. Connee, Vet and Martha were our idols and we tried to sing like them. More than 40 years later I still think they were the greatest." |
